A Message from our Regional Director

Dear Coordinators,

Our NEPA regional board has decided that because of the continuing uncertainties around the pandemic, and concerns for everyone’s safety, for 2021 we will be hosting a virtual-only NEPA Regional Tournament. Please share this information with all of your coaches!

What does that mean at the regional level?

  • Teams will submit their paperwork, and a video of their long-term solution online. Judges will still evaluate the solutions and provide feedback.
  • Teams will have a window to compete virtually in spontaneous.
  • Teams will still be required to provide judges – one long-term judge per team, and one spontaneous judge for every two teams. Judges’ training will be online.
  • Specific details for our Virtual NEPA Regional Tournament will be forthcoming.
  • The Odyssey of the Mind HQ website has virtual tournament procedures for additional information.

What does it mean for next levels of competition for teams who qualify?

  • For teams with a Traditional membership who selected “in person” as their intent, they would still compete at a live event should one be offered at any subsequent stage of the competition year.
  • For teams with a Traditional membership who selected “virtual” as their intent, and for all teams with a Virtual membership, they would continue to compete virtually at all levels of the competition.
  • There are two judging tracks at every competition level: In-person will be judged against other in-person teams, and the virtual teams will be judged against other virtual teams.
  • If a team wants to preserve the opportunity to choose to participate in an In-Person World Finals in 2021, should one be offered and they are able to attend, they need to be registered with a Traditional membership and choose the “In-Person” team option.

Though our NEPA Regional Tournament will be different this year, I’m confident our OMers will meet this challenge with the same enthusiasm and creativity that they tackle all problems!

Please let me know of any questions.

Thank you!
