Odyssey of the Mind is an international K-12 creative problem-solving competition that encourages quick thinking and teamwork.

Teams of up to seven students receive a long-term problem that they must solve in an eight-minute performance. All aspects of the solution – costumes, props, scenery, technical devices and so on – must be created by the team with no outside assistance and within a set budget. The appeal, style, success and risks of the team’s solution are all scored at competition.

Teams also compete in a Spontaneous competition, for which they are given a secret problem the day of competition. The students must work as a team on the spot to devise a creative solution.

Teams compete first at the regional level each March. The winning teams advance to state finals in April, where they compete against teams from across Pennsylvania for the chance to attend World Finals in late May.
